When it comes to increasing diversity and inclusivity among your fans, taking a “barriers, not bait” approach is crucial. This approach asserts that rather than attempting to bait specific populations of people into a relationship with your brand, your efforts should be focused on removing perceived barriers to access.
Hands are the people involved in the process of producing, distributing, and serving craft beer. Incorporating considerations of diversity and inclusion among chief organizational goals will not only allow breweries to attract and retain well-qualified employees, it will also ensure that breweries process the flexibility to respond to the demands of an increasingly diverse marketplace.
An inclusive brand is not just one that reaches many different types of people, but one that is also the foundation of many different types of positive relationships.
The efforts of organizations working toward the related goals of being more inclusive and expanding diversity should be sustained, actively managed, and accurately assessed.
Dr. Janel Nikol Jackson Beckham is the Chair and Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at Randolph College. She has a storied history in the brewing community that includes over a decade of avid homebrewing and extensive research and writing about beer and its place in American culture. She has delivered keynote addresses, presentations and guest lectures on the culture and inclusiveness of craft beer.
As the Brewers Association’s first ever Diversity Ambassador, she spearheads the Brewers Association’s diversity efforts. She works closely with the Brewers Association’s Diversity Committee and travels to Brewers Association events such as Craft Brewers Conference and Homebrew Con, state guild meetings, and other industry events to speak about the value of diversity and inclusion in craft beer.
She has joined her experience in craft beer with her research on the diversity and inclusion space to provide this five part series of best practice resources to Brewers Association members.

Diversity and Inclusion Event Grants
The Brewers Association (BA) is proud to fund event grants in support of local and regional events that intentionally promote and foster a more diverse and inclusive craft beer community. Funding priorities include events that increase access and awareness of craft beer to new demographics while cultivating an inclusive environment, however all events will be considered for funding by the BA Diversity Committee.
