Raw Materials Issue

For the November/December 2021 The New Brewer, we present our annual Raw Materials issue. In this issue, we take a closer look at the barley and hops harvests from the U.S. and around the world. U.S. hop acreage was once again at record levels, while U.S. barley production declined significantly, with potential quality issues due to heat stress. Hops guru Stan Hieronymus discusses “hop terroir” and the differences that locality provides, while Dave Thomas outlines how brewers can adjust to the myriad quality issues from this year’s barley crop. Stephanie Grant examines the various supply chain issues currently affecting brewers.
