Larry Horwitz Named New Safety Subcommittee Chair

Damon Scott started homebrewing while finishing a degree in chemistry from Hanover College, In. That unofficial ‘independent research’ led to a lightbulb moment and a move to Colorado to work as a brewer. In the following ten years, Damon managed brewing operations ranging from 200 to nearly 10,000 bbls/year and experienced first-hand the challenges craft brewers face daily. In 2010, he attended Heriot-Watt University and received an MSc in Brewing and Distilling. As technical brewing projects coordinator for the Brewers Association, Damon works with the technical committee to facilitate the development of best practice guidance for small and independent craft brewers.

Brewers Association (BA) Board of Directors member Larry Horwitz has been named chair of the safety subcommittee, which is part of the technical committee structure.

Horwitz is currently brewmaster and partner at Four String Brewing Company in Columbus, Ohio. He has been a professional brewer and brewery consultant since 1992. He attended The Ohio State University and is a graduate of both the Master Brewers Association of the Americas (MBAA) Malting and Brewing Science Program at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where he was chosen as a William R. Hipp scholarship recipient, and the American Brewers Guild Brewery Science and Engineering Program.

Horwitz has been active within the Brewers Association for many years, serving on the technical committee and quality subcommittee, as well as judge panels for Great American Beer Festival® and World Beer Cup. He has also done work for the MBAA, serving as district president, vice president and technical chair and as a board of governors representative for several districts. He is currently a board member of the Ohio Craft Brewers Association, and teaches courses on brewing, judging beers and sensory analysis.

“I am passionate about the production of flavorful, high quality craft beer and worker safety. Even the smallest craft brewers execute tasks daily that can be hazardous,” said Horwitz. “The production of high quality, world class beer doesn’t matter if every one of our employees can’t return home safe to their families at the end of a shift. No beer, or production procedure is worth your life, limb, or eyes!”

Horwitz takes the place of Matt Stinchfield, who served as chair of the safety subcommittee since its inception in 2013. Stinchfield will continue as an active member of the safety subcommittee and Safety Ambassador. Under Stinchfield’s leadership the safety subcommittee has produced valuable resources that help brewers develop and execute the safety programs at their breweries including the online brewery safety training, the safety exchange and a variety of guidance documents addressing subjects like Protective Clothing for Brewery Workers and Confined Spaces.
