Colorado Governor, and former brewpub owner, John Hickenlooper, welcomed Great American Beer Festival® journalists to Denver, Friday during the event's media luncheon. Attendees were treated to a three course meal while consumer and trade media listened to an array of facts, figures and tips on navigation the Great American Beer Festival.
Additionally, brewers and brewery owners were on hand to introduce beers that were paired with each course, as well as to tell the packed room about their craft brewery. Members of the American Cheese Society were also on hand, and a selection of craft beers were paired with some artisan cheeses.
The theme of the lunch focused on brewpubs. Brewpubs represent the majority of craft brewing operations in the United States. Brewpubs, defined as, "a restaurant-brewery that sells 25% or more of its beer on site, with beer brewed primarily for sale in the restaurant and bar. Where allowed by law, brewpubs often sell beer "to go" and /or distribute to off site accounts," by the Brewers Association, continue to be on the cutting edge as far as beer and food pairings and educating craft beer consumers.
Governor Hickenlooper spoke of his past life as a brewpub owner, and provided his thoughts on the similarities of being an elected official and running a restaurant.
