The Brewers Association (BA) recently launched new sustainability manuals and resources for craft brewers of all sizes. This information will help breweries' sustainability efforts by untangling, organizing and clarifying many highly technical aspects of sustainability into concise terms. Solutions are scaled for brewpubs and packaging breweries large and small.
The BA began developing sustainability tools in response to member requests for information about implementing their own programs to understand and reduce their water and wastewater use, energy and greenhouse gas use and solid waste production. Water and wastewater in particular have become factors which can make or break new or existing breweries. The BA Technical Committee–which spearheaded development of the new manuals–regards sustainability as an industry imperative. The case studies in the toolboxes demonstrate that many U.S. craft brewers are already brewing and beverage industry sustainability leaders, lighting the way, and in the process becoming ever more competitive.
Manuals, checklists, spreadsheets and lists of online resources can be found in the Sustainability Toolbox. Resources were compiled by brewing industry sustainability experts with decades of experience at Antea Group, and were reviewed by a core team of Brewers Association (BA) member craft brewers. Dozens of craft brewers contributed case studies and responded to surveys during toolbox development. All were carefully compiled to help craft brewers become more profitable and save time as they implement sustainability strategies.
