What’s your current position at your brewery, and how did you get started in the craft brewing industry?
I am the co-owner and brewmaster at Bismarck Brewing in Bismarck, N.D. I started homebrewing as a hobby but soon realized this was my calling.
What’s new at Bismarck Brewing?
We opened earlier this year. Two weeks after we opened we were already running out of most of our year-round beers. We have been brewing more than we thought we would be, but that’s a good problem to have!
What’s the best part of being a part of the craft brewing community?
The brotherhood and the access to ideas and assistance.
Name a favorite food and beer pairing.
Bleu cheese and a dry stout.
What’s your biggest accomplishment unrelated to your job?
I made it through the first year at the Air Force Academy.
What’s your favorite beer that your brewery does not produce?
I love Surly Furious. It is a go-to even as I have moved away from IPAs.
What’s the most memorable travel destination at which you’ve had a chance to sample the local beer?
I went to the American Brewers Guild for a week at the Vermont brewery and had the amazing opportunity to try some beers that never leave the state. I wasn’t a big sour fan until I tried Hill Farmstead and realized why the style was becoming so big.
What do you like to do in your time away from the brewery?
Spend time with my kids and build the many woodworking projects I have going.
