Delaware Senators Visit Local Brewery

A news brief came out in the Dover Post recently that illustrates the power and effectiveness a guild can have on important small brewer issues. Fordham Brewing Co. invited U.S. Sens. Tom Carper (D-Del.) and Chris Coons (D-Del.) to their brewery to learn about the business and sample their fresh beer. As a direct result of the ground work of the Delaware Brewer’s Guild, as well as this meeting at the brewery, Sen. Coons has signed on to be member # 11 of the Senate Small Brewers Caucus.

Mirroring the House Small Brewers Caucus , the Senate Small Brewers Caucus provides a forum for members of the Senate and their staffs to discuss the issues important to small brewers while exploring what lawmakers can do to strengthen the growth and role of these small businesses in local economies across the country. The caucus also provides opportunities for Senators and staff to learn about the science and art of brewing beer, and the unique cultural and economic contributions made by small brewers to their communities.

Across the nation breweries are improving facilities, buying more equipment, and hiring more. The brewing industry is not just responsible for adding to production, but also to the tourism market.  States are able to entice more people to visit every year as a result of the great work that is being done in the beer industry.  It’s these stories of growth and success that are exactly what legislators want to hear. Simply inviting your state representatives out to your brewery to enjoy a beer is an opportunity to develop relationships and create beer champions of your elected officials.
