Sustainability Starts in the Field: A Life Cycle Assessment of U.S. Hops

Craft Brewers Conference 2022
Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota
Speakers: Maggie Elliot, Carman McKinney

As consumers increasingly gravitate towards environmentally conscious options, we examine how hop producers establish the foundation for sustainable beer production.

In this seminar Hop Growers of America (HGA) will discuss takeaways from the industry’s seminal Life Cycle Assessment to explore the carbon footprint of hops from field to pellets. Learn about the progressive approaches American producers are implementing to embrace ecologically sound management with empirical data, and how brewers can weave these practices into their own outreach and marketing efforts.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attain data from the U.S. Hop Life Cycle Assessment, including considerations for hop growing, harvesting, and processing into pellets
  • Explore how the U.S. hop industry is embracing sustainability through environmental stewardship, promotion of social equity, and economic viability
  • Identify the online resources enabling HGA members to uphold operational accountability to food safety and climate-smart strategies, including Good Bines self-assessments, as well as third party certification programs
