Beyond ADA Compliance: Creating and Fostering Inclusive Spaces for Patrons and Employees with Disabilities

Craft Brewers Conference 2023
Location: Nashville, Tennessee
Speakers: Jon Hyman, Ren Navarro

Most taproom and brewpub owners are aware that bathrooms must be designed to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and thoughtful managers keep reading glasses in the host stand for customers. Beyond that, are you aware of the myriad of challenges that patrons and employees might need to navigate to be part of your business? How do you graciously (and legally) accommodate applicants with mobility issues for your brewing team? What about service animals? Did you know that your employees and customers may be navigating neurodivergent challenges that should have accommodation?

Ren Navarro and Jon Hyman will offer strategies for accommodating customers of all kinds in your taproom, approaches to cultivating a company culture that is welcoming to employees with disabilities, and guidance about working with your customers and employees with disabilities. Further, you will walk away with a complete understanding of your legal obligations and a list of resources to assist you with offering these accommodations. As a beer industry veteran and DEI consultant, Ren speaks beer and leads with her personal experience with neurodivergent (and occasional physical) challenges. In turn, Jon has been assisting business owners with disability accommodation and legal guidance for decades. This team has you covered.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the vast scope of what a disability can be Learn cues to identify, and then both constructively and graciously work with your customer, applicant, or employee Discover all of the resources that can help you be accommodating in your brewery and public spaces Develop a complete understanding of your legal obligations with regard to accommodation of disabilities Look at your front-of-house and back-of-house spaces with new perspective, thinking of new ways to offer a more safe and comfortable experience for both customers and staff members
