Kim Lutz

What’s your current position at your brewery, and how did you get started in the craft brewing industry?

I am a brewer at Maui Brewing Co. I started homebrewing in college and continued while working at J Lohr Winery. I moved out to Maui and applied for a job at Maui Brewing Co. where I was trained to become a brewer.

What’s new at Maui Brewing Co.?

Big expansions. We have new fermentation tanks, new grain silos, and are doubling our production.

What’s the best part of being a part of the craft brewing community?

The best part is making a quality product that I am proud of and meeting other brewers that have the same passion I do. I also love making people happy with delicious brews.

What do you like to do in your time away from the brewery?

I spend most of my time diving and exploring the aquatic life of Maui. I also love cooking for my friends and family.

What’s your favorite food and beer pairing?

My favorite is Spanish sheep cheese with American brown ale.

What’s your biggest accomplishment unrelated to your job?

Winning four national championships for college lacrosse [at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo], and All-American awards.

What’s your favorite beer that your brewery does not produce?

Russian River Temptation.

What’s the most exotic travel destination at which you’ve had a chance to sample the local beer?

Kauai. We sampled Waimea Brewing Co.’s selection of local beers.
