Breweries can be a hazardous place to work. Among the biggest hazards are the numerous chemicals we use, including those that can injure us by contact, inhalation, or absorption through the skin, as well as chemicals that can react with each other to have a negative effect on our health.
In 2024, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) updated its Hazard Communication (HazCom) standard regarding chemical storage. In this seminar, Tony McCrimmon and Amanda Milford will review this standard and how it affects your brewery. They will show you how to control chemical hazards, use tools such as Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), and incorporate this information into your existing HazCom program. Walk away with a handout to use for planning, updating, and maintaining chemical storage.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand proper chemical storage and what OSHA will look for during a visit to inspect the chemical use at your brewery
- Learn what changes were made between the previous standard and the new revisions in a side-by-side comparison
- Discuss how these changes will affect your brewery’s existing HazCom program
- Discover the problems improperly stored chemicals can cause
- Learn how to plan for chemicals spills
