The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have released the latest edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which provide science-based recommendations to promote health and well-being across the lifespan.

The updated guidelines echo the 2020 version by urging “less alcohol for better health,” although they do away with the previous recommendation that men limit their intake to two drinks or less per day and women to one drink or less. The guidelines are updated every five years.

The Brewers Association supports moderation and responsible consumption, ideas that are reflected in the new dietary guidelines. Beer, when enjoyed responsibly, remains the beverage of moderation and a valued part of many people’s balanced lifestyle.

The Brewers Association is also a signatory to a coalition statement on alcohol guidance in the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, issued on January 7, 2025, by a broad group of agriculture, beverage, and hospitality organizations. The coalition statement noted that the guidelines’ “longstanding, overarching advice is that if alcohol is consumed, it should be done in moderation,” and emphasized that the updated guidance is “underpinned by the preponderance of scientific evidence.” Read the full coalition statement.

The Brewers Association and more than 85 organizations have also joined the Science Over Bias effort, which calls for a transparent, balanced, and evidence-based approach to alcohol-related research and policymaking. More information on this initiative.

Responsible consumption of alcohol has been a part of human society for thousands of years. Breweries, brewpubs, taprooms, bars, social clubs, and other similar gathering places play an important role in society and in our local communities. These spaces are often the ‘living rooms’ of the community, convening and hosting numerous activities and groups that build a sense of belonging and bolster societal well-being.

Independent craft brewers remain committed to promoting responsibility, supporting consumer choice, and fostering welcoming community spaces across the country. The Brewers Association will continue to engage constructively in discussions around nutrition policy and public health, guided by sound science and respect for moderation.
