The Brewers Association has learned of several firings that will impact ongoing federal research into barley and hops. At least six scientists working at the Cereal Disease Lab the Cereal Crops Research Unit Malt Quality Lab, both operated by FDA’s Agricultural Research Service (ARS), have been let go. These terminations may impact ongoing barley disease research and programs to better assess malt quality. In addition, two scientists working for the Hop Stress Physiology Lab, funded by ARS, have been let go. The Lab’s ongoing research into abiotic stress resistant hops, partially funded by the hop industry, will end.

The Brewers Association continues preparations to submit comments to FDA on its proposed “front-of-package” labeling mandate, which will impact the labeling of fermented hard seltzers and many hard cider products. Comments are due on or before May 16, 2025. The impact of the new administration on this proposed rule remains unknown at this time.
