What’s your current position at your brewery, and how did you get started in the craft brewing industry?
I’m the Chief Beer Maker at Whetstone Station [in Brattleboro, Vt.]. My time in the industry started years ago when I combined my passion for craft beer and my geeky side with HereForTheBeer.com, a beer travel blog. Over the years I’ve had the privilege to meet many amazing brewers from around the world, picking up bits of advice and tips from many along the way.
What’s new at Whetstone Station?
We recently acquired some fun and funky barrels from a local maple liquor distillery. We’ve also launched a series of beers made with spring water from various locations around Vermont, including several in collaboration with the Vermont State Parks.
What’s the best part of being a part of the craft brewing community?
The people of the craft brewing world are amazing. Seriously. In no other industry that I have ever been a part of is there so much camaraderie even among strangers.
What do you like to do in your time away from the brewery?
Hiking, diving, and mountain biking are passions, as is travel. I recently acquired an Airstream and look forward to taking off to explore more breweries in a cross-country tour this November.
What’s your favorite food and beer pairing?
I once had a Victory Golden Monkey paired with an ostrich egg omelet. For some reason I will never forget how amazing that combination was.
What’s your biggest accomplishment unrelated to your job?
I have been lucky enough to get to visit 38 states and 12 countries and have a plan to take that passion even further later this year.
What’s your favorite beer that your brewery does not produce?
I am a huge fan of sours. Crooked Stave, Russian River… those guys are awesome. Recently I was floored by New Belgium’s Lips of Faith Le Terroir. Wish I could get my hands on some more of that. So delicious.
What’s the most memorable travel destination at which you’ve had a chance to sample the local beer?
I’ve been so lucky to travel a ton, for beer. So many places have amazed me, but I would have to say Bruges, Belgium, at the Brouwerij Straffe Hendrik in their biergarten on a beautiful summer afternoon.
