What’s your current position at your brewery, and how did you get started in the craft brewing industry?

Beetje (Be-cha) [in Portland. Ore.] is a one-man show at the moment, which makes me the brewer, keg washer, sales, compliance specialist, accountant, and the list goes on. I had a passion for beer and decided I would give the beer industry a shot by starting a tiny little brewery in my garage.

What’s new at Beetje?

In short, everything. Beetje is a new operation and just trying to stand on its own two feet. There is so much more for me to know so I expect just about everything will be new for at least the next year.

What’s the best part of being a part of the craft brewing community?

The creative, transparent and down-to-earth people. The vast majority of people that work in this industry truly love what they do and that shines through.

What do you like to do in your time away from the brewery?

Spend time with my family, garden, cook, and the occasional cyclocross race.

What’s your favorite food and beer pairing?

Two in the same vein: 1) Wood fired pizza and a hoppy American pale ale and; 2) Strong cheese and a saison.

What’s your favorite beer that your brewery does not produce?

A Bohemian-style lager.

What’s the most memorable travel destination at which you’ve had a chance to sample the local beer?

My wife and I traveled to visit her family in Belgium and we had the opportunity to drink an astonishing array of good beer. Hands down, my favorite visit was to De Dolle Brouwers.
