Support and development of State Brewers Guilds is a major focus of the Brewers Association in 2011. The addition of Acacia Coast, the Brewers Association's new State Brewers Association Coordinator has helped the BA be more of a resource for existing and fledgling guilds. Acacia has been busy crisscrossing the country attending state brewers association meetings in 10 states, thus far, with half of them centered on initial guild formation.
Recently, Acacia was in Tennessee to attend the initial guild meeting in the Volunteer state. Below is her description of how things went.
Tennessee Start A Guild Rally
July 16, 2011
With almost 35 people in attendance, the Tennessee guild rally was quite a success. The different skill sets will help carry the momentum of this meeting. In addition to brewers and brewers-in-planning, the group attracted allied professions offering their support to the new guild.
The initial meeting discussed the need for lobbying services, the desire to collaborate with the TN Hospitality Association, the recent legislative bills that the TN craft brewers dealt with that highlighted a need for a guild, and the power of speaking with a unified voice.
The group delegated a steering committee to manage the initial details such as drafting bylaws, 501(c)6 paperwork, establishing a distribution list, and the mission statement. They have agreed to meet on September 11, to reconvene and begin the process of finalizing the initial paperwork.
A very successful meeting all around.
