Last week, while the House continued its recess, California Representative Mike Thompson made a stop at California’s Eel River Brewing Company for a tour of the brewery. While there, the Congressman spoke with members of the Eel River staff on various challenges small brewers face, but also the rewarding nature of the business.

Representative Thompson is both a member of the House Small Brewers Caucus, as well as a co-sponsor of the proposed bill to decrease the federal excise tax on small brewers, HR 4278. The bill which was introduced by Massachusetts’ Congressman Richard Neal, and now has over 100 co-sponsors, would work to create badly needed jobs in the country by cutting the amount of excise tax small brewers currently pay for each barrel of beer produced from $7.00 to $3.50. Many brewers would then reinvest the money saved into new staff and capital investments.

Eel River Brewing Company was founded in 2006 and in 1999 became the countries first certified organic brewery, as reported by the brewery’s website. In 2007, the company expanded their production capacity by moving brewing activities to Scotia, CA “where the nation’s first certified organic brewery has become the nation’s first biomass powered brewery!”

For more information on Eel River Brewing Co., visit their website. Congressman Thompson’s was reported to be a fun and educating experience for the staff. Breweries are encouraged to reach out to their own representative and invite them for a brewery visit, to co-sponsor HR 4278 or to join the House Small Brewers Caucus.
