House Small Brewers Caucus Update

The House Small Brewers Caucus, now numbering 71 Representatives, met for the second time in 2010 to continue the educational series on beer styles started at the April meeting.  Brewers Association (BA) President Charlie Papazian presented information, to a standing room only crowd of Congressional staffers, on a number of styles not commonly encountered outside the world of craft beer.  Eight BA Board members also attended and added their own perspectives to the conversation, describing their experiences in designing and brewing a variety of specialty beers.  The benefits of small brewer excise tax reduction as contained in H.R. 4278 provided a common thread throughout the session as well.

BA Board members presenting included Sierra Nevada’s Ken Grossman (collaboration beers), Elysian Brewing’s Dick Cantwell (colonial/pumpkin beers), Boscos’ Chuck Skypeck (stone beer), Iron Hill’s Mark Edelson (American style sour beer), Deschutes’ Gary Fish (organic ales), Moon River’s John Pinkerton (herbal/spice beers). Allagash’s Rob Tod (wit beers) and the American Homebrewers Association Governing Committee Chair Chris Frey on the important linkage between homebrewers and professional craft brewers.
