The Brewers Association board of directors approved the technical committee's recommendation to add a contract staff position of technical brewing projects coordinator for the Brewers Association. This position was approved in the Dec. 2009 board meeting as part of the approval of the 2010 annual plan and budget.
Chris Swersey, competition manager for the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup, has agreed to this contract position in addition to his competition manager contract. Chris started in the industry in 1992 and has an extensive background that covers many of the raw materials and technical matters he is expected to address and then communicate solutions with the technical committee and membership. Here are some of Chris' qualifications:
--brewer at Heavenly Daze Brewery in Grill (the early one in Steamboat, not the Denver brewery that closed a few years back).
--brewer at Micky Finn's in Libertyville.
--brewer with Jacob Leinenkugel/Miller/Leinenkugel's Ballyard Brewery in Phoenix.
--BS in chemistry. MS in Medicinal Chemistry
--founding member and former president of AZ Craft Brewers Guild
--MBAA Packaging Technology Course
--Siebel Quality Control Course
--Instructor for Siebel Brewery Operations Course while at Mickey Finn's
--Judge and then Competition Manager for GABF and WBC
--Technical editor for The New Brewer.
Chris will be working on projects related to draught beer quality, water usage, wastewater, stray kegs, CBC technical presentations, The New Brewer, and more. We welcome Chris into this new role. He will work out of his home base in Salmon, Idaho. His email is chris at brewersassociation dot org.
