What’s your current position at your brewery, and how did you get started in the craft brewing industry?
My current position [at Broad Street Brewing in Reinbeck, Iowa] includes president, owner, brewmaster, bartender, head of human resources, marketing director, maintenance, housekeeper, zookeeper, and morale commando. I got my start as one of those dreamy homebrewers who turned pro by taking the plunge and following their dream.
What’s new at Broad Street?
Our brewery just opened in July 2011 so everything feels new right now. We are proud of the balanced, easy-drinking beers that we are producing. We are working on expanding into distribution right now, so that's new for us.
What’s the best part of being a part of the craft brewing community?
It is really cool to be involved in a trade that operates so much like a brother/sisterhood. Everyone I've had the pleasure of dealing with is really excited to talk about beer. A quick phone call can turn into an hour-long conversation very easily.
What do you like to do in your time away from the brewery?
I enjoy spending time with my wife and four kids first. In a previous life I was a general contractor and carpenter, so when I get a few minutes I’m usually found hammering on something.
What’s your favorite food and beer pairing?
Fresh cheese and sausage with almost anything. As a matter of fact, that is what my diet mostly consists of.
What’s your biggest accomplishment unrelated to brewing?
Spending the past four years getting debt-free by flipping houses so I can (mostly) cash flow my dream of owning a brewery.
What’s your favorite beer that your brewery does not produce?
Hacker-Pschorr Munich Gold.
What’s the most memorable travel destination at which you’ve had a chance to sample the local beer?
Goose Island at the North Clybourn pub. Many travel plans have started there only to be traded for more fresh pints of Honkers.
