What’s your current position at your brewery, and how did you get started in the craft brewing industry?

I am head brewer [at Natty Greene's Pub and Brewing Company in Greensboro, N.C.].  I started as a “walk-on.” I just showed up and started learning on the job at Natty Greene’s. I had never even homebrewed before I worked here.

What’s new at Natty Greene’s?

One of the newer things I’ve been doing is collaborations with the local homebrew club. We are doing quarterly group brews, where I hand out sweet wort to everyone in the club and see what they can come up with. Then we all get back together and choose one to brew on the big system. It’s a lot of fun and really keeps our homebrew community happy.

What’s the best part of being a part of the craft brewing community?

Meeting new brewers. Here in North Carolina the craft beer scene is exploding, so there is never a shortage of new brewers to meet.

What do you like to do in your time away from the brewery?

Mountain bike, mountain bike, mountain bike.

What’s your favorite food and beer pairing?

IPA and pizza…..any good IPA and any good pizza.

What’s your biggest accomplishment unrelated to your job?

Managing to stay fit and healthy at 45.

What’s your favorite beer that your brewery does not produce?

Sculpin IPA. I love IPA and Ballast Point makes a great one.

What’s the most memorable travel destination at which you’ve had a chance to sample the local beer?

Asheville, N.C.  I don’t have to travel very far to reach the best beer destination on the East Coast.
