What’s your current position at Cape Ann Brewing Co., and how did you get started in the craft brewing industry?
Head brewer, owner, dishwasher. I got started after leaving the finance industry after being one of those running from debris on 9/11. While searching for a new career I worked on the bockumentary "American Beer" and was instantly in love with the passion and the people of the industry. Soon my family was talking about how feasible it was and two years later we had opened the Cape Ann Brewing Company in Gloucester, Mass.
What’s new at Cape Ann?
In February ‘09 we opened up our brewpub to allow us to be more creative with our recipes and have a venue to really showcase what we’re all about here at CABC: family, friends, and community. We had our first year of releasing packaged seasonal products and we’re now working on moving into a new venue with a focus on using renewable resources.
What do you like to do in your time away from the brewery?
People have time away from their breweries?
What’s the best part of being a part of the craft brewing community?
Without a doubt it’s the people. The support each and every member of the industry has for each other at this stage of the game is just tremendous. There’s such a sense of community and passion for good beer.
What’s your favorite food and beer pairing?
Since opening up the pub, we’ve started serving a smoked fish plate from a local smokehouse that’s absolutely phenomenal. While I suppose any rauchbier would go great with it, I find our Fisherman’s Tea Party is perfect with the combination of smoked fish and cheeses.
What’s your biggest accomplishment unrelated to your job?
I take a lot of pride in always being there for friends and family.
What’s your favorite beer that your brewery does not produce?
Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Marzen.
What’s the most exotic travel destination at which you’ve had a chance to sample the local beer?
Unfortunately when in Greece on my honeymoon I missed out on all the craft beer that supposedly is being brewed out there and only really got to drink Mythos...it quenched my thirst.
