What’s your current position at your brewery, and how did you get started in the craft brewing industry?
I am co-owner and brewer [at Anaheim Brewery in Anaheim, Calif.].
What’s new at Anaheim?
The Beer Garden is hopping. The landscape work is finished and it is lovely to sit in the shade and share a beer with neighbors and friends.
What’s the best part of being a part of the craft brewing community?
I love it because it's cooperative, not competitive. There are three breweries within 3.5 miles of us; go out 5 miles and you can add in two brewpubs. We all bring so much to the table. Everyone has their different styles and vibes.
What do you like to do in your time away from the brewery?
Listen to blues; grow flowers, herbs, and vegetables; ride motorcycles.
What’s your favorite food and beer pairing?
Simple cheese pizza and Pilsner.
What’s your biggest accomplishment unrelated to your job?
The break-in ride for my 1994 Harley was from California to New York, onto a ship to England, then a boat to France, and on to Germany, where we were living.
What’s your favorite beer that your brewery does not produce?
Winkler Bräu Kupfer Spezial.
What’s the most memorable travel destination at which you’ve had a chance to sample the local beer?
The Franconian area of Germany, especially the Alt Muhl River Valley (or Altmuhltal). Every bend of the river, there's a small town with its own brewery. My favorite is the Weltenburg Monastery near Kelheim. We lived nearby in the 1990s and drank Schneider Weisse without realizing it would become a household name in the U.S.
