Thanks to all of the regional organizing committees and the volunteer judges and stewards, and thanks to all the brewers who entered this year! We set records for both the number of entries and the number of brewers, making the American Homebrewers Association's National Homebrew Competition once again the largest beer competition in the world!
Final Round National Homebrew Competition Winners Announced
Results for the 2008 National Homebrew Competition have been calculated. Gold, silver, and bronze medal winners were picked for each of 28 style categories from 759 beers judged in the final round.
This year there was a 5-way tie for the Ninkasi Award, given to the entrant who accumulates the most points in the 23
beer categories, the 3 mead categories, and the 2 cider categories in the Second Round of
this competition. All Ninkasi finalists had 12 points in the Final Round. Two brewers are from the Great Lakes Region, Jeff Carlson, and Joe Formanek; one from the Midwest Region, Curt and Kathy Stock; one from the East Region, Gordon Strong; and one from the Northeast Region, John Watson. The tie-breaking rules can be found on page 6 of the NHC Rules & Regulations (Part III, section C, number 5), and they are the points calculated for the brewers winning entries in the First Round of the competition. Gordon Strong is the 2008 Ninkasi Award winner based on the 36 points he earned in the First Round of the competition.
Congratulations to Jeff Carlson, Joe Formanek, Curt and Kathy Stock, and John Watson on their award winning entries in the 2008 National Homebrew Competition, and congratulations to Gordon Strong, winner of this year’s Ninkasi Award!
